Don Darue’s Tribute to Guy Clark – Listen Anytime

June 8

Guy Clark died May 17, 2016.  KJIV is proud to present Don Darue paying a lasting tribute to one of our greatest songwriters, period!

Guy Clark songs are a lot like Guy Clark. Some are dramatic, almost self-consciously so, and others seem to wink at you.

They are all intensely personal. “Desperados Waiting for a Train” is about a man who took Guy under his wing when he was a boy growing up.

“New Cut Road” is about a man he wished he knew, a fiddle-playing master he’d wished he met.

He wrote songs about things he valued: loyalty (“Old Friends”), respect (“Stuff That Works”), small gifts that bring great pleasure (“Homegrown Tomatoes”), and trusting your muse (“Boats to Build” and “The Cape”).

Running through all of them was Guy’s love of language. “Heartbroke,” became Guy’s first number one for Ricky Skaggs in 1982.  The lyrics to “Instant Coffee Blues,” a song about a shortsighted tryst of a couple clearly not destined for togetherness—read like a short story.

Many of Guy’s records, like 1995’s Dublin Blues, are now indispensable to songwriting fans.

Dondo eloquently captures the very essence of the incomparable Guy Clark on the following programs.  Enjoy!

Bruce Van Dyke’s Prince Retrospective on KJIV – Listen Anytime

April 26

Dig if you will THIS picture……the latest in Fine 89 tributes to fallen superstars is done and loaded and ready to roll.  yes, it’s of course the Prince Trib, and you can hear hthis 105 minute sonic retrospective…click on it and listen at your convenience, which is nice.

The format for this tribute–i used only 4 of prince’s THIRTY NINE ALBUMS.  the guy was not just a genius, but a prolific one.  so to get this trib special on the air in a speedy fashion, i went with 4 of his greatest discs…..1999, Purple Rain, Around The World in a Day, and Sign O’ The Times.  I fired up 19 songs from those 4 albums, and the result…..well, it sounds pretty freakin’ great.  It will thoroughly remind you just how special a talent Prince truly was, and completely deserving of his status as legend, icon, and totally awesome mofo. yes, all the hits are in the mix….and a lot more.   as usual, it was a blast to produce and re-acquaint myself with another outstanding and impressive body of work!  we say farewell and good-bye in the best possible way…..with love, respect, admiration, and volume!  crank it up and let it rip……and i hope you enjoy it much and that it brings up all kinds of memories and emotions.  BVD

Bruce Van Dyke’s Glenn Frey Retrospective on KJIV – Listen Anytime

February 19

For any fine 89er who ever gave a wing flap about the Eagles……my 90 minute tribute show to the late Glenn Frey, a founding member of the band and one of the two eagles to be in the band from start to finish (the other, of course, being Don Henley).

I leaned heavily on the first 3 Eagles albums for this one, so you’ll hear some of Glenn’s forgotten/overlooked obscurities, as well as some of his greatest hits, as well as a couple of his excellent solo songs from the 80’s.

And yes, I highly recommend sitting in the dark or low light for these shows, just you going one on one with your stereo…..and see where these songs take you.

Before the eagles got bogged down with mega-stardom, lawsuits, and acrimony, they were, especially on Eagles, Desperado, On the Border, and One of These Nights, a helluva band.

You’ll hear why they were the biggest band of the 70’s….bigger than led zep and the stones and pink floyd and anyone else. hope you dig!

February 16

“Hey, anybody who wants to dig some Dave…..listen in on Catie’s & my retrospectives of the late great Mr. Bowie.

Yes, you’ll hear some of the hits. And yes, you’ll hear some of the great non-hits. They both came out real good and I think you’ll like.

Albums represented include Ziggy, Aladdin, Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, Low, Scary Monsters, Young Americans, Heroes, and Let’s Dance.

So dig……it’ll be at least as good as motherflippin’ jeopardy!”
