Guns, Students, and America

March 9

let’s speak sanely here about our insane mass murder problem.  it hasn’t been real good lately.  since October, there have been 3 bad episodes…..very bad…..Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs Texas and Parkland Florida. death counts were 58, 26, and 17. blood in the street. blood in the church. blood in the school.  Three horrific slaughters in 5 months. thoughts, prayers, and condolences ain’t cuttin’ it.  they’re obviously worthless. people want to do SOMETHING.  and they want to do it NOW.

last year, researcher Mark Gius of Quinnipiac University published his study on School Shootings. it’s a sober, sensible look at this horrific problem. he writes “the only gun control measure that had a statistically significant effect on the number of school shooting victims was the assault weapons ban (which was in place from ’94-’03). When the assault weapons ban was in effect, the number of school shooting victims was 54% less than when it was not in effect.”

Gius then went on to note that “while school shootings are the most horrific of crimes, they are also a very small share of overall  murders in america.” He estimates that the average annual reduction in deaths with a new ban on assault weapons would be perhaps less than 10 a year.

So, writes Tom Jacobs in the Pacific Standard, “if our goal as a society is to reduce the overall murder rate, an assault weapons ban would be highly ineffective. BUT, IF WE WANT INCREASED PROTECTION FROM PEOPLE WHO AIM TO CREATE MASS CASUALTIES IN SCHOOLS—OR CONCERT VENUES AS IN LAS VEGAS–IT COULD BE OF ENORMOUS HELP.”

to which we at JiveRadio say…….duh!

if you’re fed up and pissed off with mass massacres in this country and NOTHING being done in response, please note that the Student-inspired March for Our Lives will take place all across the country and all over the world on Saturday March 24th. the Reno event will be downtown at the City Plaza at 11:30.  to find out more about marches everywhere, just go to March for Our Lives dot com. As of today, March 9th, there are 581 Marches scheduled to hit the streets on the 24th.  MILLIONS of people will march for action, for sanity, for mercy, for safety in our schools. NOW!!!!!  it’s time to send this message to Ryan, McConnell, Trump, and other lickspittles of the National Rifle Association. And honestly, if you’re gonna stand there with a straight face and tell me you hunt with an AR-15, then i’m gonna tell you i water my vegetable garden with a fire hose.  One more time–we are NOT coming for your pistols, your rifles, your shotguns, your crossbows, your brass knuckles, and so forth. We just want to BAN the human shredding weapons of war. Period.

dateline–march 5, 2018

March 5

i sampled the show this monday morning (3-5-18) and it was a good day in the old Bucket.  here’s what i’m talking about. beginning at about 8:40 am.

echo & the bunnymen–the back of love

col. bruce hampton & the aquarium rescue unit–dead presidents

the yardbirds–i’m not talking

toni price–going out that front door

david bromberg–send me to the ‘lectric chair

curtis mayfield–pusherman

chuck berry–school days

REM–me in honey

the monkees–listen to the band

gregg allman–these days

steve earle–you know the rest

little feat–skin it back

annie lennox–whiter shade of pale

henry mancini orchestra–a profound gass (peter gunn soundtrack)

and so on and so forth…..

so there’s a taste of the BVD Bucket of Real Gone.  a blend of schizoclectic music radio that takes place when the computer on random shuffle pulls songs out of the Big Bucket O’ Tunes in a most willy nilly kind of way.  some day the apple is lame, and some days it’s red hot.  today was a good one.  worked for me anyway.

the schedule of our special programming is here on the home page to the right.  and yes, fellow jivers Sister Tiny, Hayseed Don, Lump Sum Tom Ward, and Diane Michaels the diyatollah of rock and rollah are all cranking up good new stuff to pop your cork on a weekly basis.  we love you when you listen and we’re cool with it when you forget.  ta ta for now!

Corvallis joins JiveRadio orbit!

February 3

KORC-LP 96.5FM Corvallis, Oregon

On Jan. 31, the FCC granted Corvallis, Oregon-based Veterans For Peace a “Low Power FM” broadcast license. OpenSkyRadio funded & built the “facility” and is providing custom, locally-generated JiveRadio content while local outreach and organization is undertaken.

Broadcasting from our friend George’s yard shed, the antenna is surrounded by trees taller than it is, which is bad for radio waves. While we solidly cover the parking lot at Papa’s Pizza (99W), and leak into south Corvallis, we need a better site for an antenna.

Anybody out there have a site that looks over Corvallis?

Carson City’s KNVC takes solo flight.

January 16

JiveRadio’s content has been acting as a place marker on Carson City’s KNVC-LP 95.1FM since our parent non-profit, OpenSkyRadio, had something to do with the licensee obtaining the FCC license last February.

I thought we would have some notice and time to alert our Carson listeners before The Jive would be cut, but that was not to be. I sincerely apologize to all of the 95.1 Jive listeners out there who had no idea this was coming to such an abrupt end. Our stream at JiveRadio.org is going strong and we care about you.

So, Nevada’s capitol city has a new “community based” radio station. We at OSR hope that the citizenry will embrace and build on this important socio-cultural resource potential.

Cheers & stay tuned (up)! – Jeff ‘A Radio Guy’ Cotton
