Chris Strachwitz, the founder of Arhoolie Records, has passed away at the age of 91. He was a German-born American record label executive and record producer who founded Arhoolie Records in 1960, which became one of the leading labels recording and issuing blues, Cajun, norteo, and other forms of roots music from the United States and elsewhere in the world. Strachwitz devoted his life to collecting the ever-changing sounds of regional or vernacular music, first on 78 rpm records and later on tape as played in homes, backyards, front porches, and beer joints. He preserved songs that otherwise would have died along with their artists. Strachwitz died peacefully at home in Marin County, California, surrounded in his last days by dear friends and family.

While they are terrible at data entry (and computer skills in general), with much help from our Donor Wrangler over 200 prime CD’s from Bruce Van Dyke’s personal library have been added, with more to come. All majorly great artists like The Beatles, The Eagles, Dylan, The Allman Brothers and many more.

APRIL 14 (From down the rabbit hole): Rejoice at the landmark news that the tiny community of Gerlach, the gateway to the Burning Man event, stood up and was heard this week at the Washoe County Commissioners meeting — the county DENIED Ormat’s drilling permit, and the project has been STOPPED. This extraordinary moment of people power turned the tide against a large-scale, industrial project that would have forever altered the landscape, viewshed and quality of life in this region.
